Heisman Trophy Award

The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award (often known simply as the Heisman Trophy or The Heisman), named after former college football player and coach John Heisman, is awarded annually to the most outstanding collegiate football player in the United States. The Heisman Award is considered the highest individual player honor in American college football. It is awarded in December before the postseason bowl games.

Notes: Bold entries denote players who went on to become members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame; names that are gray in color / have no links are players who won the Heisman, but never player professional football; and players with a * next to their name won the Heisman during their junior year and a ** is for the sophomore recipient.

"They say I've shown courage on the football field, but for me it's only on the field, and only in the fall. Joey lives with pain all the time. His courage is 'round the clock."  - Heisman Trophy Winner John Cappelletti (1973 Acceptance Speech, honoring his 11-year-old brother Joey, who was back home battling Leukemia)

Heisman died on October 3, 1936, at the age of sixty-six. Two months after his death, the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy was renamed the Heisman Trophy. Today, the Heisman Trophy remains college football's preeminent individual award, given annually to the nation's best college football player.

Players who won the Heisman Trophy then went on to win the Rookie of the Year: Alan Ameche (NFC, 1955), Jim Plunkett (AFC, 1971), Tony Dorsett (NFC, 1977), Earl Campbell (AFC, 1978), Billy Sims (NFC, 1980), George Rogers (NFC, 1981), Marcus Allen (AFC, 1982), Barry Sanders (NFC, 1989), Eddie George (NFL, 1996) and Charles Woodson (NFL, 1998).

Did you know that only four Heisman Trophy recipients went on to win a Super Bowl MVP Award? This "club" includes: Roger Staubach (Super Bowl VI), Jim Plunkett (Super Bowl XV), Marcus Allen (Super Bowl XVIII) and Desmond Howard (Super Bowl XXXI).
