The Joe F. Carr Trophy is awarded annually to the league's most outstanding football player. The Joe F. Carr Trophy was named after the League President (1921 - 1939) and after the 1946 season the award was discontinued.

After the Joe F. Carr Trophy stopped being issued in 1946, several other league most valuable player awards surfaced including: the United Press International NFL MVP (started in 1948), the Newspaper Enterprises Association NFL MVP (started in 1955), the Associated Press NFL MVP (started in 1957) and the Pro Football Writers of America NFL MVP (started in 1975).
